For his fourth album, Love & Thunder, Andrew Peterson again takes on dual roles of singer and songwriter, performing both with excellence. This album has the feel and sound reminiscent of the late Rich Mullins. For those not familiar with Andrew Peterson, he is a folk singer and this is a folk album. Neither melancholy nor bubblegum, the strong acoustic guitar mixed with warm vocals make this album a listening pleasure.
The lyrics are powerful, illustrative and very deep. As with most folk music, each song is a narrative. Peterson tells stories not only about his life, but also of biblical truths. He effectively communicates to the listener the point of his music.
Even at first listen, certain songs capture attention, inviting the listener to pause and examine more closely the rhythmic melodies and percussion. "Just As I Am" is a perfect example of this, incorporating piano, guitar, a string arrangement and percussion.
This album is truly great. It isn't over-produced, heavy with effects or flashy production elements. Peterson delivers infectious melodies that get under the skin. Not just the music, but even the vocal delivery of Peterson's smooth voice gets into the head and stays there for days.
