Three Smooth Stones: Faith Enough to Love
By Margaret Becker

Writing checks has become a precarious experience as of late. What a year.

It’s been a balancing act of sorts, the “needs” verses the “wants.” We’re all feeling it; a new day for all of us, especially God’s people.

In September, I saw first-hand at a hunger presentation what our current economic and environmental crisis trickles down to in the Third World. Starvation. Babies being born fairly healthy, only to lose their chance at life as they try to nurse off their starving mother’s milk.

What happens to the “least of these” when God’s people are financially strapped?

I Timothy 1:5… “Now the end of the commandment is charity, (love) out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and faith unfeigned.

Do we have faith enough to love? To give out of our lack in a show of love? Do we have faith that is not “feigned”? Faith to carve out of what little we have, believing that God is ultimately in control, and that He can still take a loaf of bread and use it to feed five thousand?

Ten percent of all the proceeds from my new project, Air, have gone—and will continue to go—to feed babies. World Vision has created a “super peanut butter,” Plumpy Nut, that costs one dollar per serving. A serving provides everything a baby needs for the day. Starving babies grow normally on it.

I am not giving out of my excess. If you come to my house, you will notice my viewing choices on television are sparse. You might find some stray coupons in my junk drawer. And if you come for dinner, well, I hope you like beans.

Faith that is not “faked” is necessary to fulfill the ultimate commandment—love. Faith not “faked” gives when the rest of the world is hoarding. Faith lived out shows our family, our neighbors, our community, that God’s people reflect His provision especially in times of extreme duress.

As I write out my final check of 2008 to World Vision for the babies, I marvel. What an incredible time to be a believer. What a deep invitation we have received from our precious Father. We are officially summoned into the deeper work of God’s chain of provision. It’s our moment. It’s your moment. What will you do for Jesus, to Jesus, as He waits in need all around us?
