Here’s yet another pop/rock collective that has generated a buzz in the grassroots community. Five-piece act Big Daddy Weave deservedly ascends to a new level with its label debut, One and Only. Polished production (thanks to FFH’s Jeromy Deibler), catchy melodies and an eclectic blues/funk/jazz-tinged verve make for a robust first effort.

Sporting diverse influences from Steven Curtis Chapman to Dave Matthews Band, the disc offers a mixture of radio-friendly pop/rock. But what makes Big Daddy stand out is the bold, front-and-center prominence of saxophonist Joe Shirk. His rugged, jazz/funk chops are especially acute on bouncy numbers "In Christ" and "Neighborhoods." Equally impressive is Mike Weaver’s potent vocal range on worshipful track "Audience of One" and mid-tempo cut "Never Goin’ Back."

A few points are deducted due to a "clichéd lyrics" infraction, but that won’t disqualify Big Daddy Weave from becoming the next band of distinction.
